Valuable backlink checker.
According to Google, “Content and Links going into your site, are the two most important ranking factors followed by RankBrain” – Andrey Lipattsev, (Search Quality Senior Strategist).
So, if you have your content in place, you probably should focus on building backlinks pointing to your domain and important pages. Quality links are the ranking factor that can help you outperform your competitors in search.
When you’re new to SEO please read this section What Are Backlinks?, Why Are Backlinks Important?, and for those of you who know all about external links, let’s dive right in.
How to use the backlink checker?
The Free Backlink Checker is developed to give you access to the backlink profile of any site on the web. See who is linking to you and research your best performing content. Find your competitors most valuable backlinks and examine their backlink profile to spot patterns and possible link opportunities.
How long does it take to find a new backlink?
The time it takes for a link to show up in the backlink database largely depends on the popularity of a website. In general popular websites get indexed faster than smaller / less popular websites.
Google’s index and the backlinks database are two different things.
Backlink checker results explained
Have a closer look at these metrics, so you know how to interpret the results:
- The tool returns the 100 most valuable backlinks, depending on your selection:
- External backlinks pointing to a specific page.
- External backlinks pointing to your complete website.
- One Link per domain (site-wide links are reduced to a single link in the report).
- The links are sorted based on SEMrush Domain Authority score.
- Anchor text (text or image used for the link).
- Follow / No-follow label.
- Total External Links.
- Referring Domains.
- Referring IPs.
- The option to analyse traffic statistics for the specific backlink.
- Most popular anchor text (the most used link text).
- Most popular URLs (these are the pages receiving the most backlinks).
Use the export function to generate a .CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets.

How to improve your backlink profile?
Before you start working on improving your backlink profile make sure you have the right content in place. I won’t bother you with the mantra: “Content is King”, oh sorry just did ;-)) But if you don’t have any interesting quality content, it will be pretty hard to get results from your link building efforts.
So now we have this covered, here are 3 link building strategies you can use to improve your website authority and backlink profile:
- Lost Link Recovery – Have a look at 404 pages with inbound links. Use a 301 redirect to make sure visitors and search engines get referred to the right page, which will also help you to recover your lost link value.
- Competitor backlink audit – Analyse the link profile of your competitor and research the opportunities, to match your, or even better outperform your competitors link profile and subject authority. When performing an competitor backlink audit you should also analyse inbound links pointing to top performing pages, so you don’t miss out on valuable link opportunities.
- Relation building – Find influencers in your market, who already published well performing content. For example: Best SEO Tools For.. , Top 10 products, etc. You know these authors are interested in your subject and are possible able (when they like your product or service) to get you in front of your audience and earn you a valuable link doing so. To quickly identify list post, resources and authors for your subject have a look at the Link Building Tool.
What Are Backlinks?
Backlinks are links pointing form website A to website B. Some frequent used synonyms (also in this article) are: external links, inbound links, incoming links.
The total number of backlinks pointing to your complete website and their quality, result in the overall authority of your domain. The external links that point to a specific page help this page to rank in the search engine results (depending on their quality and relevance).
TIP: to find out more about quality links, have a look at this article on the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog
Why Are Backlinks Important?
Backlinks are important, because they are basically seen by search engines as votes, from one website to the another. The more “votes” your website has earned, the higher your website will rank in search engines.

Thank you for this great tool!

You’re welcome Erwin!
Update:
Seems from today I see some changes in the backlink report.
Can’t find the follow and nofollow links in the report.
What should I do?
Hi Gorgbet,
Yes since this month I’ll be working with SEMrush as API provider for the Backlink Checker.
So, this probably explains the changes you see in the report.
Nofollow [NF] and followed [F] links are part of the report and the CSV export.
A fully updated version of backlink checker will follow shortly.

Is the backlink data updated in real time? Thanks!
Hi KD,
The backlink database is not updated in real-time, because the website [with the link] has to be crawled and processed before it will show up in the backlink results. In general popular websites get indexed faster than smaller / less popular websites.
Hope this helps!
I really like this backlink tool, thank you Jasja.
Hi, Thanks for providing this free source to check backlinks, this is really helpful to check external links pointing to your website.
Thanks again.
Hi Maria,
You’re welcome!
Some of my backlinks in the source show Rel: no opener, but they’re shown as Follow links. Is this correct?
Hi Maddie,
Good question.
It’s considered a best practice from a security standpoint to always add rel=”noopener” or rel=”noreferrer” when you use target=”_blank” to open a link in a new tab. This prevents other pages to access your window object.
So to concluded: rel=”noopener” or rel=”noreferrer” are Not the same as rel=”nofollow”.
Cheers, Jasja ter Horst
How accurate the percentage of dofollow link information in this tools?
Hi,
Depending on the number of results the tool is returning (the tool is limited to return a maximum of 100 unique backlinks) the percentage of do-follow and no-follow links is pretty accurate.
Hi, this is Robyn.
I have one small question for you..
How do I check the dofollow backlink for my site?
Hi Robyn,
You can use the Nofollow table header to sort all backlinks from N (follow) to NF (nofollow) or you just add F into the filter field.
Good luck!
Hi, do you have any tools to automatically detect spam backlinks?
No not at the moment, but it would definitely make a great addition to the tools I’m already providing.
Thanks for the feedback!
How accurate the percentage of dofollow link information in this tools?
Accurate!
How does the “total links” work? Many of the links display as if there’s multiple links, but when I check there’s just 1? One of the links display a total of 35, but I can only find 1. The total increases the longer I wait.
Hi Lars,
The total link count refers to the total number of backlinks from this referring domain.
(This metric is not limited to a single page, but displays all backlinks coming from a specific referring to your website).

I’m confused, my website semrush tool is showing 1.5k backlinks but here in your tool, the data is showing 2.3K backlinks?
Hi John,
SEMrush and Ahrefs both use their own crawlers and data sources to gather backlinks. This explains the different results you get when using different tools.
(This tool is running on the Ahrefs API to return backlinks)
thanx…It’s a great tool and thanks for making it available for free. You can however improve it even when you show limited results. Currently it shows many sitewide links – I just used your tool to check backlinks to one of my sites and it showed sitewide links only from 2 domains.
Hi Dharmendra,
You probably used the “Broken backlink checker” and here you get all links available, because these are all relevant when you try to recover lost backlinks.
The results from backlink checker are indeed limited to 1 /p domain.
The best site to check backlinks for a domain. Thanks Admin :)

Thank you
Great Tool for checking backlinks. Keep it up!
Is there any option available to download the data?
Yes, You can hit the “Excel” icon, after performing a check, and this will make your backlinks available for download..
No need to buy the Ahrefs paid version. Thanks for this free tool. Excellent free service.
Hi,
This is indeed a pretty awesome tool ;-))
But I would definitely recommend giving the paid version of Ahrefs a try, because they offer a wealth of data for those who are serious about SEO.
Hi, do you have any tools for generating active back-links automatically?
No, and I would recommend it either!
But you can use the link building query generator to find interesting link building opportunities.
Its showing timeout error. Please let me know when it would be fixed.
Hi Palak
Just did a test and works fine.. please give the tool another go (probably a temporary API issue).
It is a great free tool to check the backlinks of any website. Thank you very much for provide such a great tool.
Best Free Backlink checker I found!!
My domain starts with a “w”, and this tool keeps removing it, despite typing https://www. before my domain.
This must be an error. Macro maybe?
Hi Nick,
Thanks for pointing out this issue. Looks like an error on my site ;-)
Will have a look at the problem later today.
Sorry for the delay, but today I had time to fix this issue. Please give the tool another go!
Update:
Let me know what you think about the new results..

Very good tool for backlink checking. I found many links and domains which are not even found with AHREFS. Thank you for this wonderful tool. But it shows only 100 links. I Hope you’ll include more links in the near future.
Thank you.
Hi Vineeth,
Thanks for your comment. This tool is indeed designed to find the best / most important backlinks.
In the near future I’ll have a look if I can expand the number of links per URL / Domain.
Cheers,
The tools is great but as a feedback, I am suggesting that it would be better if the total number of backlinks be simply mentioned somewhere at the top of the result.
Hey Aniket, Great suggestion!
I’ll probably add the options below, in the next couple of months:
Seoreviewtools is undoubtedly the Best SEO tool to check and monitor competitor’s backlinks and online authority!
Thanks Iris ;-)
This is an awesome and powerful tool. I love how quick everything loads and it helps me create my next backlinking plans… Thanks
I’m very local service oriented and I have several pages that our on the first page of google and I do get traffic. I see that I have a 1 rating DA and PA. There is decent competition for some of my keywords. Is possible to have a website that generates traffic with only a 1? It’s a young site and I’m trying my best to get it going stronger. I hired someone but that clearly hasn’t worked out well if I’m still at a one.
Hey Marc, if I were you I wouldn’t focus to much on Domain- and Page Authority, because these numbers should be used as an indication to interpret page & domain strength. Getting relevant / well converting traffic to your website is way more important.
But to answer your question: High DA backlinks will have a big impact on the DA and PA score for your site.
Success!
Thanks for this tool / service.
Does higher domain authority automatically means a higher ranking in search results? Some sites beg the differ. I am not sure so I ask! It seems to be pretty confusing and a lot of contradiction
Hi Jeremiah,
A higher domain authority doesn’t automatically mean higher rankings. Domain authority is based on multiple factors including: number of backlink, quality of backlinks, number of linking root domains and relevancy.
Rankings are based on all the above and of course the on page factors like: content quality, keyword focus, and general theme relevancy of your domain for a specific topic.
That being said, Domain Authority has a high correlation with rankings and by looking at the authority of a domain you get a pretty good idea of the ranking potential of a domain.
It’s a great tool and thanks for making it available for free. You can however improve it even when you show limited results. Currently it shows many sitewide links – I just used your tool to check backlinks to one of my sites and it showed sitewide links only from 2 domains.
Hi,
That would be a great functionality, but unfortunately this setup will double / triple the number of API units to extract this data from the MOZ API.
So for now this isn’t an option.
This is one of the best tool to check backlinks .. great work!
Great tools..
I’ve been checking my competitors backlinks with it.. Found valuable links which I can use for our off-page strategies.. Many thanks for this!
Thanks so much for offering this helpful tool. It is very useful. In case you want feedback, I think it would be great if you could please also consider including another column to display the linked page (i.e., the actual page that the backlink goes to on the domain). When selecting “All pages on this domain” it is difficult to know which page each backlink is going to on the domain. Thanks for your consideration.
Keep up the great work!
Hi Chris, Thanks for the feedback!
That’s a pretty obvious improvement, which I’ve completely overlooked ;-)
So thanks again for pointing this out and I’ve added your suggestion to my to-do-list.
It’s a great tool and thanks for making it available for free. You can however improve it even when you show limited results. Currently it shows many sitewide links – I just used your tool to check backlinks to one of my sites and it showed sitewide links only from 2 domains.
Hey Sarika,
I’ve also encountered these results and it would be a major step forward to group these results by domain. The problem however is the monthly API quota in this case. Because I have to do a lot more request to generate the report as you would like to see it.
So for now I’m unable to solve this problem.
What’s the difference between “This page” and “All pages on this domain” ?
Hey akomeogi
The difference is as mentioned above:
1. “This page” = External backlinks pointing to a specific page
2. “All pages on this domain” = External backlinks pointing to your complete website (on a specific domain).
This page to check for only url you enter, All pages is to check for all pages on your website.
Great tool. Easy to use and easy for me to read and understand the SEO metrics I was looking for. Nice to see an SEO tool that isn’t cumbersome and doesn’t require you to jump through hoops! Well done.
HI
I have used different tools and all tools show me different backlink numbers. Why is that so?
Hey Dharmesh,
My tool is designed to return the 100 most valuable backlinks for a domain. Besides the fact it is limited to the first 100 results it only returns equity links (because they are the important links).
For more info please check this post: http://www.seoreviewtools.com/what-is-link-equity/
If you have other questions, just let me know!
Is this data updated real time? Thanks!
Hi,
This data is not real time. MOZ updates their index approximately on a monthly bases.
This means you have to wait about a month to see new backlinks appear in the index.
(In case of a low authority domain it can take even longer, because these are crawled less frequent)
Cheers,
Is this data updated real time? Thanks!
Hi Athena,
The backlink data and all related metrics are updated monthly.
